Why a speed-test site has games

A speed test hands you a number, and numbers on their own are forgettable. A ping of 8 ms is abstract until it is sitting next to your own reaction time; 100 Mbps means little until you have guessed what it takes to run three 4K streams and been wrong. Each game here takes one of those figures and makes you produce, guess or race it — and the provider quizzes are built from the same data as the comparison pages, so a wrong answer is a reason to go and read why.

Nothing is tracked. Streaks and personal bests live in your own browser, exactly like your speed-test history.

Frequently asked questions

Are the games free?
Yes. Every game runs in your browser, needs no account or download, and is free to play as often as you like. The site is supported by advertising, the same as the speed test.
When do the daily puzzles reset?
At midnight South African Standard Time. Everyone in the country gets the same puzzle on the same day, and a new one appears at 00:00 SAST regardless of your device's time zone setting.
Where are my streaks and scores stored?
Only in your own browser, in localStorage on the device you played on. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no account to create — and clearing your browser data will clear your stats.
Why does a speed-test site have games?
Because a number on its own means very little. The games put a figure from your own body — a reaction time, a typing speed, a guess — next to a figure from your line, which is the fastest way to understand what a ping or a megabit actually is. The quizzes use the same provider data as the comparison pages.
Do the games work on a phone?
They are designed for one. Every game is built for touch first, with large tap targets and no drag-and-drop, and all of them also work with a keyboard on a desktop. The typing test is the exception: it measures a physical keyboard, so a phone score is not comparable.
